What is balance in a home, church, or even at work? Is balance something that we can see or can we simply just feel it? Can balance happen everywhere or is it just for certain area’s of our lives? What is balance? Believe it or not just as Jesus can dwell in us so can the devil, as crazy as that seems this causes balance in us. For just as we need Jesus we also need some not a lot of the evil/dark for it causes the balance we need in our lives. If we always had Jesus and never had anything bad happen in our lives what kind of life would that be? Would we start to think as the Devil did that we are above God? Would be humble and share our good fortune with others or keep it for ourselves? The same goes for if we are filled with evil, imagine all the pain and suffering we would go through everyday there wouldn’t be anything to look forward to. Or could also be the ones who enjoy the evil and wants nothing to do with any of the good. Balance is so important in our lives for it keeps us inline so to speak with where we want or need to be in our walks.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. Because everything has a time it also contributes to the balance that we have, so if we overload our time to one thing over another we are off balance. If we never have balance then we are missing our on the peace that is offered by God.
If we have balance in our walk with the Lord then when things get difficult we still have peace. Where as if we don’t have balance with the Lord when things get difficult instead of a mound in front of us we see a mountain. This balance may not seem like it is a big deal and you would be right at tines its not, but we can only be unbalanced for so long. When Jesus came and recruited twelve disciples these men were not prepared or had their bags packed they were caught off balance by a man who offered so much. Yet He asked for very little in return that is exactly why it is hard to be a Christian at times. We are caught off balance by Jesus and instead of simply saying yes Lord I will go, we makes excuses or we put other things first. I am guilty just as anyone else of doing this but I’m glad that I can stand before others admit my faults as a Christian. As a Christian it isn’t always about doing the right thing because to be honest sometimes we don’t know what the right thing is all the time. Being a Christian we have to be able to admit when we are wrong and give credit to the one who humbles us, for if we want balance in our lives we need what God offers. We need to see how measure up in our actions and our words to what God says we should do or say, because that’s the only way to truly become Christ like….a better Christian, husband, wife, son, daughter, brother, sister, and overall a better you.
Luke 9:1-9 Take nothing for the journey no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. Can you imagine you are one of these twelve and you get told to do this, what would you answer be? Jump now to the present world that we live in what does God say that we should do? Revelation 22:17 Note that this invitation doesn’t say women only, men only, this color skin, or even this race but it says let the one who hears come. This is and open invitation regardless of the church we go because a church isn’t found in one place it is found in the brothers and sisters that come together to praise the Lord. Balance also isn’t found in a place in comes from the assurance that once we give up the wants and needs of the world for the gifts freely given to us everyday by Jesus. Luke 9:23-26 If you want it come all are welcome come and receive what He has. If you want balance in your life all you need to do is ask, the world can tell you everything that they think you need to be balanced. But let me ask who means more to you God or the world? Is a balanced life with God worth more than a balanced life in the world? Is salvation that is freely offered and given worth having a balanced life even when the world around falls apart?
Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Faith can catch us off balance just like anything else in our lives but faith is very important in our walk. Think of it as the glue that keeps all the pieces together, each piece is a fragment of our life with or without God. With each piece added or taken away can cause the scales to be unbalanced which may lead to us to sin but it is also faith that can help give us a hope. Hope that the scales balance out, hope that one day we see the skies part, and trumpets sound. Faith makes so may things possible but if we dont keep ahold of it we may lose much more than we realize. The scales are set before us all our actions are the weights in which we are measured. Proverbs 16:11 A just balance and scales are the Lord’s; all the weights in the bag are his work. With this in mind how you measure up to the Lord? What about His disciples? Is there balance in your walk of life?
Where is the balance in your life today? Who is at the center of your life today to give you that balance? What motivates you to keep that balance and to work as hard as you do to help others find that balance? The devil is always going to be in our lives no matter what we try to do but if we have Jesus in our lives who can come against us. Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp for my feet a light on my path. John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people He said, ” I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” The balance we seek is in His light and His light isn’t like any other you have see before. It has pierced the darkness of the world and the darkness has not over come it that is the same way God works in us. He pierces our hearts of stone over coming the sins, our faults, our struggles, and everything in between turning what once was unbalanced into a just balance. Turning what was once lost into the shepherd to help find the lost and turning what was once broken into the person who helps the broken find the only one that can truly repair us with His love. His arms are open here and now in this place who will come into His warm embrace? Who will raise your arms and praise Him for the balance He alone has given us? Who will shout with the chorus of angels and worship the king of kings? Who will bow down at His alter and ask to be forgiven, ask to be restored, or even to ask for Him to send down the cleansing rain watch your sins away. Who will join me in closing your eyes and praying that God will help us find our balance in this life.

  1. Brother Corey,

Thank you for taking the time to post this message.  It was well worth saying and thought provoking.  Don't we all who love the Lord want balance in our lives.  When we try to keep our scale balanced on our own how well do we do?  I find that when I try to keep my life balanced without God at the wheel it seldom is balanced for long.  How wonderful it is that Jesus gave us a way to have a life where the scale can be held in balance.

  2. Brother Corey Haviland,

Very thought proking discussion. You describing that we actually need Satan battling us for balance, reminded me of a sermon I preached. The message was titled, "How would we know". How would we know happiness without experience sadness. How would we know healing if we hadn't experienced sickness. How would we know salvation if it wasn't for experiencing sin. I had many other points but I'm sure you get the idea. We as humans want to focus on the bad things in life. God sees problems, negative things (as we perceive it) as opportunities and challenges. God wants to empower us to be more than conqueors and win these battles. I find, the battles the Lord leads me through are preparing me to help others that will face that battle soon. Blessings brother
